Present day Brno Conservatoire is a state school which provides free higher specialized education in the fields of Music, Singing and Drama. Admission depends on successfully passing entrance exams. Students between the ages of fifteen and twenty-one attend a six-year day course which culminates in a final examination and the awarding of a diploma and a degree. The students may also finish their studies with final examinations at the end of 4th year.
Brno Conservatoire has a capacity for 360 students, which employs 150 teachers of general and professional subjects.
Students of the Conservatoire give regular performances both in-school and outside. They also participate in a variety of competitions and music festivals and displays both in the Czech Republic and internationally. Throughout the year Brno Conservatoire gives countless public concerts and several theatrical performances. Students are regular prize winners at competitions both home and abroad.
The principal department controls ten specialized departments:
Pavel Kyncl has held the directorship of the Brno Conservatoire since 2002. Hana Kobzova is statutory deputy director for educational and disciplinary matters. Deputy director Pavel Zatloukal is in charge of the school’s cultural activities as well as being responsible for public relations and promotion.
The Music programme prepares students for careers as soloists, chamber and orchestral players, as composers, conductors, choral conductors, display artists and music editors. Alumni of the Singing department assert themselves as singers or soloists in theatre or concert ensembles, and cultural enterprises. The Music and Drama programme educates actors for theatre, film, television and radio.
Academic Education at the conservatoire is provided in two areas – general and professional. In general education students cultivate their native and foreign language skills, foster understanding of the function of literature and other kinds of art and understanding of cultural liaisons in Czech and foreign history. The professional component of the academic department develops the skills and knowledge that are necessary for:
Students specializing in Music have 2-3 individual instrumental lessons per week; the recommended time of home preparation reaches up to 35 hours a week. Playing the piano, playing in chamber and symphonic orchestra, knowledge of the instrument’s history and literature are compulsory. In the 5th and 6th year of study music education are added to the curriculum. Annually, students take final exams in the major subject. The course is completed by the graduation examination.
This is a comprehensive professional exam consisting of the following parts:
Theory of professional subjects
Exam in a foreign language
Graduation performance
Art and pedagogy preparation
Successful passing of the examination is certified.
